Find your Support

Your Guide to Choosing the Right Support for You

Local Help My Way helps you find trusted, local support in your community. Our service is designed to give you choice and control, making it easier to find support that fits your needs, preferences, and daily life. You can use our directory to search by your postcode and the type of support you need, helping you find local micro-providers in your area.

If you’d like to talk things through or need help using the directory, our team is on hand to offer guidance and explain how the scheme can support you. While we can’t choose or recommend a specific provider, we’re happy to talk with you about the kind of support that may help and what to look for when choosing the right person for you.

When should I consider help at home from a Micro Provider?

You might want to consider care at home if:

  • You’re finding it difficult to cope with daily routines, such as washing, dressing and getting out and about
  • You’re finding it difficult to do the things you’ve always done, such as housework, laundry, shopping or gardening. Perhaps caring for your pet is becoming more challenging, or you’d like to go out for a meal with friends or try a new activity class at the local village hall.
  • You do not want to move into assisted living or a care home
  • You can still get about your home, and it’s safe for you to live there, but you feel lonely and would like some company and a friendly face.

Micro Providers are self-employed individuals or small organisations and will charge an hourly fee for their services. There are two ways to pay for the work they do:

Your Local Authority can arrange home care and support financially if you’re eligible via a care assessment and then a potential direct payment. Find out more here.

You can arrange your own home care without local authority involvement and pay for it with your own income/savings. You may be entitled to an attendance allowance to help fund the support or PIP if you are under pensionable age.

How it works Step-by-step

Assess Needs and Budget

Determine the type and level of support you require and establish a budget for services, thinking about how often your person will visit and how much you are prepared to pay (average costs are between £18.00 – £22.50 per hour).

Find Potential providers in your area offering the support you need

Take your time reviewing the directory of micro providers and examining individuals’ credentials. Check their reputations through references and testimonials. Don’t be afraid to call others who have used the person’s services to double-check.

Evaluate Carer Qualifications and Background

Ensure carers have the necessary training and experience to do what you want them to do – i.e. if domiciliary care, they may need a care certificate. If you need help with housework and cooking, then they do not require as much training in healthcare, but they will need a food hygiene certificate.

Focus on Compatibility and Trust

Look for a carer whose personality complements yours and who you feel will understand you and who you will enjoy having in your home and spending time with.

Understand the plan & terms

Insist on a written support plan and a contract between the micro-provider and yourself that states the full range of services to be offered, including who you are contracting, what they will do for you, how often and when they will visit. Also how much you have both agreed on, how often they will invoice you and when and how you will pay.

Stay Alert

Keep an eye on your relationship, and listen to your instincts if anything seems off.  If you are unsure, contact Sarah or Esther at Support Staffordshire, and they will be able to listen to your concerns and provide the right help to deal with any worries.
